Square Breathing Keyring- Emotional Regulation and distress tolerance skills (DBT) - Mental Health

Square breathing is a technique used to help calm your mind, and help regain focus in difficult or stressful situations. The aim is to steadily breathe in and out in a mindful way, this also helps with reducing your heart rate and the associated anxiety feelings that can create.

Square breathing may have been taught by being told to visualise a box, using your breath to go along each edge of the square. For example, in across the top, out down the side and so on.

This is usually for a count of 4, you can use a holding of breath for 4, but some children and young people find the hold difficult.

With our tactile tags it helps to further focus the mind on the breathing technique. Use the raised side, made to support children and young people who enjoy tactile experience, as you mindfully count to the desired number of seconds, until you are feeling calm and ready to proceed mindfully in whatever activity, situation you were trying to achieve.

Designed in collaboration with a senior CAMHS nurse, who has 30 years experience in the fields of adult learning disability and autism, children’s learning disability, children’s mental health and crisis intervention. Therapeutic skills include dialectical behaviour therapy, (DBT) and Non-Violent resistance therapy (NVR).
