SEMH - TIPP - Tactile Emotional Regulation Keyring, Anxiety and distress tolerance tool - TIPP skills (DBT) - Mental Health
TIPP skills are from Dialectical Behaviour therapy (DBT) and are four skills that anyone can use as a mental health first aid kit to help manage feelings of overwhelm and distress. They are skills to help us better manage tolerance to distress.
TIPP is an acronym for:
Temperature
Intense exercise
Paced breathing
Progressive muscle relaxation.
Temperature- Reducing your temperature by splashing cold water on your face, holding ice cubes either in your hands or applying to the back of the neck for example, triggers the “dive reflex” and slows down your heart rate which can distract you from intrusive thoughts or intense emotions.
Intense exercise – Can help lower stress hormones and increase feel good hormones. You do not need expensive equipment, a fast walk around the block, marching up and down the stairs or some star jumps for example can burn off that built up energy created by long periods of anxiety or stress. Only use this technique however, when you have maintained a healthy food and fluid balance.
Paced breathing – Can help increase oxygen and then lower your heart rate and blood pressure. Try breathing in for 4 seconds and out for 6 seconds until you regain calmness.
Progressive muscle relaxation – Helps the body let go of tension, try focusing on each muscle group, tense then relax and work through the whole body.
Designed in collaboration with a senior CAMHS nurse, who has 30 years experience in the fields of adult learning disability and autism, children’s learning disability, children’s mental health and crisis intervention. Therapeutic skills include dialectical behaviour therapy, (DBT) and Non-Violent resistance therapy (NVR).
