STOP skills are a tool used in Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) for distress tolerance, so helping children and young people, recognise distress and manage it more mindfully.

The acronym STOP stands for:

Stop

When you feel your emotions are running high, stop for a moment, take a breath, try and prevent the growing feeling your emotions are triggering. Name that emotion and try and stay in control before it spirals.

Take a step back

from the situation, give yourself time to think about it and feel more calm, remember there is no need to make split decisions, give yourself permission to pause and consider the situation and think about the most positive way to respond.

Observe

What’s happening around you, identify any known triggers to your emotions, gather the facts, try to recognise automatic negative thoughts and consider more positive alternatives.

Proceed mindfully

Remember your brain needs time to consider options, ask yourself “what could be the best outcome in this situation “, “what will support this feeling to become a more positive one”. Use the information gathered to help you prepare to deal with situation more effectively.

Used regularly, the brain will begin to automatically support these actions and help develop more positive responses to stressful situations and environments

Designed in collaboration with a senior CAMHS nurse, who has 30 years experience in the fields of adult learning disability and autism, children’s learning disability, children’s mental health and crisis intervention. Therapeutic skills include dialectical behaviour therapy, (DBT) and Non-Violent resistance therapy (NVR).
